The Miami Herald’s Kathryn Wexler interviewed Karl Lagerfeld at the Raleigh Hotel where he will be debuting Chanel Cruise Collection later today. The best lines from the interview were:
- “Nothing can be brought back. But you can take an inspiration and make something different of today out of it.” ~ Karl Lagerfeld
- “My favorite line from Spinoza is: Every decision is refusal.” ~ Karl Lagerfeld
Lagerfeld was chosen as one of this year’s TIME 100 under the Builders and Titans category. Zaha Hadid wrote his feature and as many fashion followers are aware Chanel has an Mobile Art Museum designed by Hadid.
As we get closer to the debut of the Chanel Cruise Collection 2008 - 2009 at The Raleigh this week, more podcasts are becoming available.
The first podcast evoked refreshment and below are the 2nd and 3rd of 5 podcasts.
The 2nd brings to mind tranquility, getting away from it all, and enjoying time. Don’t miss the floating Chanel cloud logo. The 3rd teaser has the iconic Chanel logo magically floating above the sand and water, enchanting everything in its path.
You can subscribe to receive the podcasts directly.
Come on you remember your little brother wearing his cape (a blue towel) and running around the house and yes the first Halloween costume you chose for yourself was Wonder Woman, including gold truth-telling lasso and all. (yes, she has some lame accessories but still better than Barbie)
From an early age we are fascinated with superheroes’ costumes their personally well-crafted merging of function, fashion, and fit. And actually fashionistas and superheroes have some things in common such as:
- the power of transformation
- knowing that clothes can help make or unmake a person’s identity, secret or not
- fashion as armor
- their appreciation and understanding for the perfect outfit
- embracing the power of good accessories
- shooting fire our of their eyes ….. ok only fashion editors can do that but still
There also exists an evolution in superheroes costumes, especially heroines’ costumes.
Levis is at it again coming up with great marketing strategy. Last time it was collaborating with Project Runway this time it’s about uploading to youtube and later fessing up to their creation.
Gotta love the big companies bringing it to youtube.
Next Thursday, May 15th Miami Beach’s Raleigh Hotel welcomes the debut of Chanel Cruise Collection 2009.
You can see a clip from last year’s debut in Santa Monica, CA here.
“The concept of the Cruise Collection is based on traveling, and Miami is the ideal destination: A city that moves and has energy, with its small districts and its animated streets.” comments Karl Lagerfeld.
Below is the first of five Chanel Cruise Collection podcasts created to convey the energy of the 2008-2009 collection.

PSFK reported on Vice Magazine’s 2008 Global Trend Report and provided readers with a brief comparison to last year’s report.
Vice Magazine’s annual report covers fashion trends in 15 upcoming cities among them:
Some differences you expect such as the contrast between NY and LA
NY: ” New York girls these days don’t want to look cutesy and innocent”
LA: ” For girls, the younger and cuter you can make yourself look, the better.”
Miami, didn’t make it into the report but we’ll try to work on a local trend report for you.
In Style magazine is bringing the Inside In Style event to the sands of South Beach on 11th and Ocean for the fourth year in a row. Last year over 2,000 of Miami’s chicest residents attended the two day event and this year’s event promises to be even better.
The event is held in collaboration with Miami’s Junior League chapter. For over 80 years the Junior League of Miami has led the way in giving back to the community in a variety of ways from fundraisers to community projects. In Style is donating 100% of the profits to the Junior League of Miami.
This year’s In Side In Style event will once again bring the glamour and style of In Style magazine to Miami with two full days of goodies, fun, and fashion.
Katrina Szish, InStyle’s national correspondent will be on site at the In Style cabana where she will be discussing getting ready for your summer style.
Katrina says now more than ever and especially in Miami the trend is bright colors, especially in accessories. And as far as how to wear this summer’s styles Katrina mentioned this summer is going to be more sophisticated and will have a natural feel think globally inspired, tribal patterns and safari chic.
Katrina mentioned that Miami has always welcomed bright colors and now everyone else is catching on. Local fashionistas should already be out on the hunt for those bright accessories paired with sophisticated neutrals.
For more style tips and to see the latest information on designers check out Katrina’s blog Style Spy.
And of course catch her this weekend at the InStyle Miami event with fashion shows, makeover, performances, spa treatments and so much more.
Tickets are $15 in advance and $25 on site.
Tomorrow night, Tuesday, March 18th, Sunglass Hut is unveiling it’s new flagship store on Miami Beach, a redesigned shop that provides visitors with an experience representative of the local brand and especially its Miami Collection.
The opening will also serve as a launch event for this year’s Gen Art Fresh Faces. The event will feature collections from past Fresh Faces participants including Uli Herzner, Julian Chang, Karelle Levy, Maya and Bogosse. These talented designers will showcase collections and Danny Masterson will be providing the night’s soundtrack.
I guess plenty of people will be wearing their Sunglasses at Night.
Just a quick update that there has been a change of date and Gen Art’s Fresh Faces 2008 will take place Saturday, April 12th 8:00 p.m. at the beautiful, new Gansevoort South.
Fresh Faces, is one of my favorite shows and it’s always a fun event in a gorgeous location.

It’s fashion week in Milan. And recently it was fashion week in London, fashion week in Madrid, and of course in NYC. Ok so you get the point it’s the usual fabulous fashion time of the year which happens twice a year in all it’s jet setting, celebrity first rows, one millions fashion shows, half of which no one knows……… glory
And many ladies are scanning the usual style.com and elle.com but perhaps one of the best sites to visit is Off the Runway with Robin Givhan. Robin Givhan, is the Pulitzer prize winning, fashion editor at the Washington Post. She recently blogged about the Gap’s Patrick Robinson so I went over to the Gap’s site and was pleasantly surprised to find new slightly different layouts and content. I like the color aspect especially the yellow converse and easter egg pastel khakis. Should be worth a quick stop at the closest Gap.

Earlier this week PSFK’s Orly Sharaby wrote about Levis new Laser Etched Jeans released in Japan. The advertisementsshow heavily tattooed models wearing tattooed jeans. BBH Tokyo created the campaign and is smart to focus on the popularity of tattoos (Miami Ink) and consumers’ growing desire for individual, personal touches.
Levis is definitely hip to the youth market. A good example is their collaboration with Bravo’s Project Runway. Their limited edition dress sold out in less than 24 hours and can now be found selling for more than twice the cost on eBay.
Riding the wave of popularity from their partnership with Project Runway. Levis developed the Project 501 Design Challenge. A design challenge in which anyone can submit designs online, the public votes online, and the winner’s design will be produced and sold online.
It’s great to see Levis, an iconic company doing such a great job of understanding the consumer, I just hope they bring those Laser Etched Jeans to Miami.
The Miami Style Wars continue this Saturday, January 27 at the Stoli Hotel from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. as some of Miami’s most stylish residents once again do battle except this time it’s Artists vs Designers.
The competitors have less than five minutes to tape, cut, paste, i.e. hustle. Let’s see who has the Creative Competitive Eye of the Tiger.
This round House of Diehl’s Miami Style Battle will have some fresh faces serving as judges. Contestants and Judges include:
- Leslie Abravanel
- Kayce Armstrong
- Cece Feinberg

A great way to start off any week is to have a really nice lunch and if you’re in the Coral Gables area nothing beats Whisk Gourmet. Whisk is intimate and charming and I’d recommend scanning their daily specials and ordering take out. Mondays Whisk has Misha’s cupcakes which are some of the best in Miami.
Later this week enjoy Janus Films Night at Upper EastSide Garden playing Michelangelo Antonioni’s L’Aventura Thursday, January 10th at 8p.m.
And stop by Guapa a Spanish designer boutique on South Beach sometime this week to add a special piece to the wardrobe. Guapa carries great Spanish designers including La Casita de Wendy, Jocomomola, and Miriam Ocariz.
The Wu Tang Clan concert on Friday, January 25th has been added to the calendar listing.
You must be the change you wish to see in the world. - Mahatma Gandhi
Recently more than ever we have heard about companies going green and being good corporate citizens as they take corporate responsibility. It seems that ethical behavior is rewarded with press and profit. However, how responsible are the most hallowed luxury companies?
At the International Herald Tribunes’ Seventh Annual Luxury Business Conference held in Moscow November 28-29 the buzz was ”Ethical Luxury”. Tom Ford stated “Luxury is not going out of style. It needs to change its style.” He added, “We need to replace hollow with deep.” Tom Ford understands that peace of mind and tranquility are perhaps the highest luxury.
As a globally powerful industry that has boomed in the past 20 years the luxury business must be conscious regarding their choices as must we the consumer in choosing what to purchase. WWF-UK published a report titled Deeper Luxury:Quality and Style when the World Matters, which examines what luxury companies are currently doing and what changes need to be made. The report also provides a performance ranking of luxury groups. Deeper Luxury: Quality and Style when the World Matters, is available as a pdf download.
I look forward to seeing what changes and innovations the luxury industry will bring to the table and of course some brands like EDUN, are already making a positive impact.
We’re wrapping up the 2007 calendar year and there are Best of lists and Top countdowns everywhere you look and most of the time they’re obvious or uninteresting however, sometimes these lists provide insight into great talent.
Refinery 29 released its end of year seasonal playlist Breaking Records featuring their 20 favorite albums from 2007 including
Refinery 29 also listed Best New Fashion Designers of 2007 among them
Cool Hunting provided their choices for the Top Five Photographers of 2007 out of those five my favorites are
The New York Times magazine has the seventh annual Year In Ideas issue to look back at the ideas that shaped 2007.
The New York Times is also looking forward to next year and featured Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2008 which is blue iris (click through color timeline).
The NYT article written by Cathy Horyn quotes Leatrice Eiseman, the executive director of the Pantone Color Institute: “Blue Iris brings together the dependable aspects of blue, underscored by a strong, soul-searching purple cast. Emotionally, it is anchoring and meditative with a touch of magic.”
The growth of blue’s popularity and dominance is in line with the Hot Trends predictions from JWT’s Marian Salzman and Ann Mack, which states that blue will become the new green as it relates to eco-friendly matters.
It’s hard to think that Green could ever be replaced. Green traditionally symbolizes nature, trees, freshness, youth, energy, ecology, agriculture, cleanliness, refreshing, growth, fertility, Spring. And yet blue also has great symbolism so we’ll wait and see. I could maybe see it happening for more ocean/marine centered environmental issues but I still think people and companies are going green.
Boston has LouisBoton, Paris has Colette, and we have BASE. BASE, Miami’s own brillianty curated, cutting edge, shop located on Lincoln Road has once again landed on Cool Hunting’s Holiday Gift Guide. If you haven’t been to BASE recently you should definitely pay a visit as soon as possible to find something perfect to wear to all those upcoming Basel events. Steven Giles is the curator and visionary powerhouse behind BASE, which opened in 1994 and recently added BASE Annex in March 2007. Everytime I walk into BASE I’m enchanted by its casually, smart and sharp feel. The space emits a soothing energy simultaneously providing a seemingly endless array of items for your list of things to covet … I mean list of things to gift this season
- jewelry
- chill new music
- coffee table book
- sweater that travels even better than you do
- the perfect weekender bag
…… actually this chic shop just doesn’t stop….. and luckily it’s in Miami.
Yes, you can virtually live on the internet and be inspired by great sites. But inspiration hits you from all senses and often the best ideas come from taking a walk down the street and taking it all in the sounds, the sights, the colors, the energies and if you take a walk down a street off your habitual path (yes, I mean no Lincoln Road) you might discover something completely novel harajuku girls, skater boys, and hip hop are all street. A new book Streetworld hit the streets around the world and covers youth culture and its creativity. And so now that you’re walking down the street noticing that novel, youthful energy everywhere stop and look at Louis Vuitton’s new holiday windows, designed by two students from Central St. Martins. All 380 Louis Vuitton stores will display Latitude 48.194 / Longitude 02.286 the holiday windows designed by Christopher Lawson 21 from Ireland and Marcos Villabla 26 from Spain. So this French powerhouse label goes to an art school in London and a guy from Ireland and another from Spain create these windows that will be seen all around the world….. gotta love the multinational, EU power on that one. Next time you need a burst of creative energy lace up those Adidas and hit the Mean Streets or at least next time walk to a different Starbucks.
Just off her win from Style Wars Karelle Levy’s Krelwear will be hosting tea this Sunday, November 18th from 3-7 p.m. This tea party marks the start of the annual KRELwear holiday sale. It’s Monday and if you haven’t noticed the increase in traffic you will soon as the academic year is upon us. As another school year starts I always get the urge to purchase school supplies a la Tom Hanks in You’ve Got Mail. One great thing about growing up and going to school in Miami is that you can enjoy playing outside all year round.
Speaking of playing outside
There is a new spot the UpperEast Side Garden this is one of those spots that deserves discovering. Each week the garden screens movies and it also houses a mini golf course. This is the ideal spot for a gathering with friends especially if you’re looking for something outside the usual but very much having a Miami feel.
Another spot with a quintesentially Miami feel will be Karu&Y this Wednesday August 22 as it serves host to one of Miami’s favorite fashion labels Krelwear who will be helping Miami Fashion Weekly celebrate as the magazine goes gloss.
