The World Press Photo of the Year was selected earlier this month, the winning image is a striking color photograph of an exhausted soldier. The photographer is Tim Hetherington from the UK on assignment for Vanity Fair. The image is moving to say the least and speaks of the exhaustion of a person and of a nation.

This photograph and other World Press Photo winning images, will be on exhibit in Miami beginning next week and concluding on March 5th, at the University of Miami’s School of Communication courtesy of the Knight Center for International Media. There will be an opening reception on Monday, February 25th from 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. to RSVP email socevents@miami.edu or call 305.284.2539.

Angels

Angels in Africa is a remarkable book that tells the stories of seven women in Africa who are proactively changing the lives of those around them. From a Ugandan nun leading a dance troupe for AIDS orphans to a Tutsi woman bringing together Hutu and Tutsi widows to heal from the scars of Rwanda’s genocide. Angels in Africa was featured on The Guardians top 10 photography books list.

Beth O’Donnell, a photographer who lives in Miami was behind the lens to capture the touching stories. Beth will be at Napapijri on Friday, February 15th from 7-9 p.m. for a photo exhibit and book signing. A portion of the proceeds from this book go to The Pendulum Project, a non-profit humanitarian organization focusing on children in regions severely affected by the HIV/Aids epidemic.

Napapijri is located at 1008 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach to RSVP email steven_klick@vfc.com or call 305.695.7301.

The New York Times magazine has the seventh annual Year In Ideas issue to look back at the ideas that shaped 2007.

The New York Times is also looking forward to next year and featured Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2008 which is blue iris (click through color timeline).

The NYT article written by Cathy Horyn quotes Leatrice Eiseman, the executive director of the Pantone Color Institute: “Blue Iris brings together the dependable aspects of blue, underscored by a strong, soul-searching purple cast. Emotionally, it is anchoring and meditative with a touch of magic.”

The growth of blue’s popularity and dominance is in line with the Hot Trends predictions from JWT’s Marian Salzman and Ann Mack, which states that blue will become the new green as it relates to eco-friendly matters.

It’s hard to think that Green could ever be replaced. Green traditionally symbolizes nature, trees, freshness, youth, energy, ecology, agriculture, cleanliness, refreshing, growth, fertility, Spring. And yet blue also has great symbolism so we’ll wait and see. I could maybe see it happening for more ocean/marine centered environmental issues but I still think people and companies are going green.
